Portovenere on the Ligurian coast
is a romantic fishing village named after Venus the Goddess
of love. In the past it inspired many poets, like Byron,
and so became known as Poet’s Gulf (Golfo dei poeti).
Interesting shops and restaurants can be found among the
pastel coloured houses. On the promontory that guts out
into the sea stands the small black and white 13th century
church of San Pietro which was built over an ancient Roman
temple. From here, and from the 16th century castle on
the cliff top, there are glorious views of the nearby
Cinque Terre. The name Cinque
Terre refers to five dramatically situated villages that
seem to cling to that very edge of the cliffs. Once only
accessible by sea, the villages can now be reached by
train. There are campsites in the nearby towns of Deiva
Marina and Moniglia, from where you can take the coastal
train.

 |
Next, on to the port of Lavagna from where
you can take a mini cruise to the exclusive harbour and
resort town of Portofino
stopping off at S. Margherita Ligure on the way. The
little harbour of Portofino is usually crammed with luxury
private yachts.

Now on to Genoa, Italy’s most important
commercial port, situated in a natural harbour with the
mountains behind it. Among the things to see is the old
port, restructured in 1992 for the Colombus
centenary, is full of museums, shops, restaurants, palm
trees and an antique galleon. Then there’s the magnificent
San Lorenzo cathedral which
blends virtually every architectural style present in
Genoa including Romanesque, Baroque and French Gothic.
The Palazzo Ducale, once
seat of the ‘Doge’ of Genoa, is an elegant building with
two fine 16th century courtyards and now houses a major
arts and cultural centre.

|
 |
From Genoa you can then head for the west coast to relax
and enjoy a few days in the sun. Exit the motor way at
Ceriale and stopover at ‘Baciccia’ camping grounds.

 |
With two or three days available you can cross the border
into France and enjoy the holiday atmosphere in Nice or
Cannes, and visit Montecarlo in nearby Monaco.
