Bologna,

the starting point, our offices and fleet are here too. Overnight at the “Citta’ di Bologna” campsite where they have a superb swimming pool. Bologna has one of the world’s oldest universities. It’s also well known for the ‘Portici’ or vaults which cover most of the centres footpaths, protecting the pedestrians from the scorching Summer sun and the cold Winter rain. Among the sights to see are the splendid Piazza Maggiore, Palazzo del Podesta’ (12th century), Palazzo Re Enzo, San Petronio – enormous but unfinished Gothic cathedral, Neptune statue and fountain. And you can’t miss the two towers, one leaning of course, and San Luca cathedral on the hilltop. Bologna also hosts the Ducati motorbike factory.

Padua,

city of culture. There is another very old university here (1222). La chiesa del Santo is the burial place of Saint Anthony. Aslso worth visiting, Piazza Prato della Valle, Palazzo del capitano, Palazzo della Regione, the Scrovegni frescos and the statue of Gattamelata by Raffaello.

Venice, by way of the famous Palladian Villas.

On the road from Padua to Venice along the Brenta canal you can see the beautiful villas designed in the 1550s by Palladio the renowned architect from Padua. Among the most famous are Villa Barbaro and La Rotonda. Many of the Palladian villas contain frescos by great artists like Veronese and Tiepolo. Now on to the campsite “Alba d’Oro” at Mestre from where you can get to Venice quickly by bus. Venice is truly a unique city, incomparable and spectacular, full of magnificent buildings and monuments. The riches of St. Mark’s alone bear witness to Venice’s position as a world power from the 12th to the 14th century. The city was originally founded in 421 BC.

Ravenna, city of mosaics

The city rose to power in the 1st century BC under the Roman Emperor Augustus. In AD 402 it was made capital of the Western Empire. Ravenna is renowned for its early Christian mosaics which span the years of Roman and Byzantine rule.

Assisi,

home of Saint Anthony. Assisi, a beautiful medieval town, is heir to the legacy of Saint Francis (c.1181-1226) who is buried in San Francesco cathedral. Assisi’s main square contains an almost perfectly preserved Roman temple-front from the Augustan age.

Rome, the eternal city.

The choice of monuments to see in Rome is virtually unlimited. Here are just a few : the Colosseum, Forums, Capitoline, Pantheon, Trevi fountain, Vatican City, Spanish Steps and countless museums.

Caserta and the magnificent Palazzo Reale

Practically as big as Versailles, the Palazzo Reale dominates Caserta. It contains over 1,000 rooms, grand staircases, and richly adorned royal apartments. It was begun in 1725 for the Bourbon King Charles III. The surrounding park is equally overwhelming.

Unforgettable Naples

Once the Bourbon capital, Naples is compact and full of palaces, churches, convents, and monasteries. Worth seeing are Palazzo Reale, San Carlo Theatre one of the world’s most oldest and important, Galleria Umberto I, and the cathedral. From the Bay of Naples you can see Mount Vesuvius.

On returning from Rome: Gaeta, Circeo Parkland, and Anzio.

Orvieto perched on a plateau.

Lastly, the town of Orvieto perched on top of a hilly outcrop is a backdrop for the magnificent cathedral which was begun in 1290 and took 300 years to complete. It is among the greatest of all Italy’s Romanesque-Gothic cathedrals.
